The Dirty Picture Movie Review
The Dirty Picture (Hindi)
Release Date:
Synopsis:The story of a make up girl who became an extra in movies and gradually the most wanted heroine of the early 80s. It is the story of Silk Smitha, a sex symbol from the South film industry. Silk knew her audiences well and she seemed unstoppable until she fell in love which could not be fulfilled. She was the queen of sensuality to the world but an ordinary woman at heart who sought true love. An unfortunate encounter with deceit and infidelity led to the tragedy that became her life.
The problem with The Dirty Picture isn’t that it speaks one language while telling a story in another, but that it isn’t able to make up its mind about where it belongs
Read full reviewIt’s an average film made eminently watchable by its courageous star
Read full reviewThis is Balan’s, or for that matter any contemporary Bollywood heroine's, ballsiest role so far.
Read full reviewThe film crumbles while negotiating the thin line between a woman’s inherent power and her vulnerability
Read full reviewThe Dirty Picture is not a full-fledged biopic. Instead of painting a layered portrait of Silk, it draws an outline. But Vidya lends her so much transparency, aplomb and sauciness, the outcome is far more awe-inspiring than it deserves to be.
Read full reviewWhat makes us watch, despite everything—the overheating, the overwriting-- is Vidya Balan, who dares to go where not too many leading ladies have
Read full reviewWith a highly entertaining first half, and a mediocre second, The Dirty Picture falls short of being truly remarkable. But for that ‘boombaat’ of a performer, Vidya Balan and entertaining dialogue, the film is worth the ticket price.
Read full reviewA fantastic Vidya Balan fronts this entertaining, titillating romp that delivers one tight slap on the face of hypocrisy of showbiz... but does little else
Read full reviewDirty Picture forsakes much potential nuance that could have made this a great film instead of merely a film with a great lead character. Having said that, the film is far more engaging than most Bollywood produce.
Read full reviewA casual celebration of the worst of the Eighties. But the remarkable lead performances lift ‘The Dirty Picture’ from mediocrity
Read full reviewBalan is The Dirty Picture. From the aperitif to the dessert. Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t do her justice
Read full reviewVidya Balan gives a performance of a lifetime in this film
Read full reviewVidya Balan is all woman, and she is all sensuousness in a performance that is brave, bold and completely natural.
Read full reviewBalan's uninhibited embrace of Silk makes for a riveting performance that has more nuance than everything in the rest of the film put together
Read full reviewThe Dirty Picture reiterates that bold is beautiful. A ballsy entertainer that deserves a watch.
Read full reviewThe Dirty Picture is essentially Vidya Balan's film, all the way. She gives a towering performance as the protagonist who remains unapologetic about her life till the very end
Read full reviewThe Dirty Picture banks heavily on shock-value, sex-value and most importantly, script-value. It's an exceptional portrayal of an ordinary person's rise from scratch to extraordinary heights and her subsequent fall
